From 1992 to 2007 Joaquim Bairrão coordinated several studies in the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of Porto University that originated a body of knowledge on different types of characteristics of early child care and education settings and about the relation between such characteristics and child development. The purpose of this paper is to enlighten the research path of the team he coordinated in the field of quality of preschool education and care. The Early Child Care and Education Study (1992-1998) stands out as the precursor of forthcoming studies. Data from subsequent studies developed by the team are also referred. Results and their meaning in the present context of preschool education are discussed.
