Abstract

The authors present the results of a preliminary empirical validation study of a new graph-perceptive instrument to assess the children cognitive development. The new instrument named The Robot is an assembly of common geometric figures structured as schematic and symmetrical human picture. A sample of 177 children of four groups were employed: Down syndrome, autistic, learning disabilities and normals. The rationale of the test assumed that there is a direct relation between visualmotor coordination development and the gestalt function sought as a global assessment of the general intelligence factor. The test claims to be a good predictor as well of the degree of children readness for writing and reading learning in the first grade school curriculum.
