This paper discuss the premature birth within a biomedical and psychosocial framework. The author describes and discusses date from a national survey and from a national sample of premature birth. Comparing a group of 890 mother-premature infant pairs with a control group of 717 mothers and their term babies we did not observe significant differences between the characteristics of mothers in both groups in age or parity but contrary to what was expected the results suggest differences in previous pregnancy and level of education favoring the mothers of premature babies. The results are discussed within a scope of our actual national health service.
