Comparação social, identidade grupal e identidade profissional. Um estudo com bancários

The study to be described here is based on the Theory of Social Identity (Taifel and Turner, 1979). In a previous study, made inside the Campus of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, the services offered by three banks (BB, BESC and CEF), were evaluated by the University’s community. BB and CEF were, in general terms, evaluated positively, where as BESC suffered a negative evaluation. The present investigation verified the effect of the comparison and of the discrimination on: the self-esteem, the group identity and the professional identity of bank-clerks. 50 bank-clerks of agencies located in the city responded to a questionnaire of social comparison, to tests of self-esteem (Rosenberg, 1965; Kuhn and McPartland, 1954) and to tests of group and professional identity.
