-Abstract
A study on self-perception and self-esteem was conducted with children aged 10-12. In this study comparisons were made between a group of children who had to engage again in the same academic year due to academic failure, and other group composed by children who have succeeded. The present focus, within the framework of Educational Social Psychology, stresses the need to confront empirical data with prevailing beliefs that, so far, have determined educational politics and practices. The main finding was the absence of significant relationships between academic failure and self-esteem.
