This article reviews some of the most significant developments in the area of drug prevention evaluative research during the past three decades. It is stressed that this field has witnessed a growing sophistication, expressed in a body of methodological procedures to evaluate alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs. Some perspectives concerning the future of evaluative research for the 90’s, namely, the need to articulate the evaluation procedures with a theory of drug use initiation and combining qualitative as well as quantitative data, are finally discussed.
