-Abstract
This research evaluates a program of home-visit nursery education designed to cater for children living in a rural region of the Algarve, too sparsely populated for the provision of formal nursery schooling. The program was evaluated over the academic year 1991-92. The evaluation instrument used at the start and finish of the program was the Keele Pre-School Assessment Guide (1980). The participating children, together with a control group of children from a rural area where no program was operating, were also tested on the entry into infant school using Infant Rating Scale Level 1 (Lindsay, 1981). Results on the measures showed very significant gain by participating children. The research thus appears to demonstrate the great effectiveness of the program.
