Abstract

The aim of this research was to study the relationship coach-athlete in a junior national team of football during one season by means of two scales applied the players in four moments. Subjects were 14 male athletes of 15-16 years old who participated in all the 4 moments of evaluation. It was used the Portuguese versions of the Inventory of Interaction Coach Athlete (Medford) and the Leadership Scale for Sports (Chelladurai & Saleh)- Results show Training-Instruction and Reward behaviors as the predominant ones while Autocratic behavior is the less perceived one according to LSS; the Medford scale reveals a very positive perception of the coach. Correlation between the two scales are positive considering Training, Reward and Social Support behaviors of LSS with the general measure of Medford scale while Autocratic behavior correlates negatively with the general value of Medford.
