The present study stresses the importance of beliefs as related to academic learning, particularly addressing written composition. Present research envolving 103 junior and high school students (5th, 8th, 11th grades) focused on the assessment of beliefs regarding functions and audiences belonging to three categories of writing: expressive, transactional and poetic. The author reflects on the results with the aim of suggesting some general leads regarding educational intervention.
