Hegemony and polemic in the social memory of the discovery of Brazil: Presentation of the volume

Abstract

This text tries to accomplish three aims. Firstly, to present the story and aim of the project that originated the texts presented in this volume of PSICOLOGIA--the project "O descobrimento do Brasil 500 anos depois: memória social e representações dos Portugueses e brasileiros [The discovery of Brazil 500 years later: social memory and representations of Portuguese and Brazilians]. Secondly, to propose briefly the framework that underlies this project--the analysis of the relations betweensocial representations and social memory. Finally, to sketch a summary of the contributions to this volume, as well as their general conclusions.
