Abstract

This is the first of two papers on the effects of filmed violence upon the viewer’s aggressive behavior. The author expound the main theoretical and methodological trends in experimental research on this topic, and review the major theoretical models which support the experimental work, namely the cathartic, the imitation, the frustration-aggression and the emotional activation hypothesis. Experimental paradigms derived from those underlying hypothesis and their results are presented as well.
