Abstract

The authors describe family systems either as flexible or rigid, insomuch as they modify the balance between omeostatic and transformation tendencies during the life circle of the family. A model of strategic therapy dealing with rigid systems is outlined in the paper. If the family expresses rigidity through a provocative behavior in therapy, the therapist joins the family in a counter-provocation to unbalance the family system and allow change. The basic stages of the therapeutic process are illustrated through transcripts from a family with a schizophrenic patient.
