Abstract

This work is the outcome of a general reaction from some sectors connected with Education before the Ministerial Ruling number 32/EBS/86, issued by the Ministry of Education, which concerns all students from preparatory and secondary schools up to the 9th form, obliging them to get at least level 3 in Língua Portuguesa in order to succeed. Attempting to find out the student’s position and to get suggestions before the decision from M.E., decided to organize an inquiry and to apply is to a sample of 100 students, from two secondary schools from the urban zone of Braga. The results which were obtained were analyzed under two perspectives: total percentage of the answers under to each evaluation item and its analysis and percentages of the answers concerning the two main evaluation items according to the Social Status of the students and its analysis. As to the former I’ve come to the conclusion that 90% of the students rejected the Law; 52% suggested the need for a better preparation of the teachers, 79% believed that the Law will force the teachers towards a more effective work and 82% admitted that success in Língua Portuguesa is absolutely necessary. AS to the latter it was provided that among those of lower Social Status, the rejection of the Law increases and it is also proved that the need for a better preparation of the teachers is definitely required. These conclusions made it possible t come to two types of decisions. One concerning the training of teachers of Língua Portuguesa; the other concerning the urgent and effective implementation of an educational scheme for ‘Kindergarten’ children all over the country.
