Abstract

An investigation on Portuguese emigrants was carried out in France in 1977 in order to study both the adaptation process to the new country and the project to return to the country of origin. It was thought that the presence or absence of a project to return to the country of origin was associated with a constellation of variables, which could reveal the level of the emigrants adaptation to the new country. A questionnaire was given to 110 emigrants and the data obtained confirmed the relationship between the degree of adaptation and the emigrants’ intention to stay or to leave. A factorial analysis was performed and it was shown four types of adaptation: a project to leave soon was associated with an unsatisfactory adaptation; those emigrants who wish to return in the middle term were best characterized by an instrumental adaptation thought they may leave in the long term (...)
