Abstract

The author tries to avoid in this paper many of the pitfalls that threaten those writing about the preservations: to give a detailed or teratologic description of the many forms of sexual deviation, to present a definition of preservations by comparison with the so-called normal sexual behavior. He sees in perversions, according to Freud, regressions to certain fragments of childhood sexuality. Further he points to the persistence, in the perversions, of the infantile tendency to abolish sexuality, by the denial of the existence of two different sexes. Also the psychic proclivity to imagine fantasy creatures in which both sexes could co-exist. Such bi-sexual creatures are present not only in ancient myth and philosophy (for instance in Plato’s Androgyn) but also in more modern cults, worships, sects, ideologies.
