-Abstract
After reviewing the most important theoretical developments in the field of alcohol and drug education/prevention during the past twenty years, the author briefly describer the theoretical foundations of an alternative model in this area. The effectiveness of a eight session program to alcohol abuse prevention was then testes on secondary school students from two sub-urban Oporto junior high schools. The prevention strategy attempted to focus on the major affective and social factors that appear to promote the abuse of alcohol and other drugs in adolescence. Results indicated that the prevention program had a significant impact on alcohol use. Furthermore, significant changes were also evident with respect to selected attitudinal variables in a direction consistent with non-substance use.
