Abstract

This contribution focuses on innovations in cognitive couples therapy generated from recent work based on the principles of cognitive therapy. The philosophy and theory of couples dysfunction is viewed from a purely cognitive approach as compared to the more traditional systems approach. Attention is also given here to clinical assessment, including the use of specific surveys and questionnaires. The direct use of cognitive techniques is dysfunctional relationships is addressed, along with communication training and problem-solving strategies. The coursed as well as the need for both conjoint and individual sessions with spouses, are also highlighted. A number of forms and questionnaires that can be used in the assessment with dysfunctional couples are described.
