Abstract

Self-esteem is a crucial concept for a wide range of areas in psychology. Several studies conducted in portuguese have adapted scales of general self-esteem (e.g., Rosenberg, 1979’s self-esteem scale) but have neglected other crucial aspects of this construct such as state self-esteem. To address this limitation, the present article provides a portuguese adaptation of Heatherton and Polivy’s (1991) state self-esteem scale. Results suggested a reliable measure with a factorial structure identical to the original scale, which included the components of performance, social, and appearance self-esteem. The discussion focuses on the advantages of using a state self-esteem measure.
