Abstract

Discusses neuropsychological aspects of schizophrenia. Research suggests that schizophrenia has a neuropathological basis, compromising the brain in an apparent diffuse way, involving several cerebral areas and causing several neuropsychological, behavioral and personality dysfunctions. The authors enumerate the main complex nervous activity disturbances frequently present in schizophrenia, correlating them with the cerebral areas thought to be involved in the pathological process. In addition to focusing on some neurochemistry aspects of schizophrenia, the possible effects of pharmacological therapy on cognitive and behavioral symptoms are discussed.
