Compared DSM-IV and International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) criteria for the diagnosis of dementia. The agreement between 2 sets of clinical diagnostic criteria were analyzed. 897 subjects with suspected dementia syndrome completed a neuropsychological assessment and were classified with the DSM-IV or ICD-10. Results show that 82.6% of the cases were classified as dementia with DSM-IV criteria, while only 63.8% were given a diagnosis of dementia according to ICD--10 criteria. The agreement between the DSM-IV and the ICD-10 criteria was 61.4%. Implications for research and treatment are discussed.
