Resumo

Beliefs about emotions, namely their controllability and usefulness, play a crucial role in shaping emotional regulation strategies and psychological well-being. The Emotion Beliefs Questionnaire (EBQ) was originally developed in English to assess these beliefs and has since been adapted for other languages. This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the EBQ for European Portuguese speakers (EBQ-P), following the guidelines of the International Test Commission (ITC). The translation process involved forward and back-translation procedures, expert review, and a comprehension survey. Data were collected from 244 adults (84.4% female; mean age = 44.7 years), with exploratory factor analysis (EFA) conducted on a random subsample (n = 123) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on the remaining participants (n = 121). EFA supported a three-factor structure—General Controllability, Positive Usefulness, and Negative Usefulness—consistent with the original scale. CFA confirmed the model with acceptable fit (CFI = 0.901; TLI = 0.877; RMSEA = 0.076), similar to previous adaptations. Internal consistency was strong (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.847) and paired-samples t-tests indicated that negative emotions were perceived as more controllable than positive emotions, while positive emotions were considered significantly more useful than negative emotions. These findings suggest the EBQ-P is a valid tool for assessing emotion beliefs.
